The remote job market right now

Roles, levels and locations, counted from live listings

Every figure on this page comes from the remote listings open on Ambition Pad right now, collected from company career pages. It shows which remote roles companies are hiring for, the level they hire at, the experience they ask for and where applicants are allowed to live. The numbers are recomputed every few hours, so they move with the market.

At a glance

  • 10,381 open remote roles at 1,257 companies.
  • 3,018 of them were published in the last seven days.
  • 14% are open to applicants anywhere in the world; the rest are limited to particular countries or regions.

Which remote roles are hiring

Software engineering has the most openings, with 2,127 roles (20% of the board), followed by Sales & partnerships with 1,325. Roles are grouped by the words in their job title, so a “Data Engineer” counts as data and an “Engineering Manager” as software engineering.

The level companies hire at

Remote hiring leans senior. 48% of open roles are senior, lead, manager or director positions, against 3% for interns and junior or entry-level staff. If you are early in your career, filter the board for those titles and expect more competition for each one.

Experience asked for

54% of listings give a minimum number of years. Of those, 55% ask for five years or more. A stated minimum is usually a guide rather than a hard rule, but it tells you which level the company has in mind.

“Not stated” means the company’s own posting does not say. Contract roles are often the easiest to take from abroad, because the company pays you as a business rather than putting you on its payroll in its own country.

Where applicants can live

“Remote” rarely means “anywhere”. Most remote roles can only be done from the country where the company already employs people; United States leads with 3,568 roles. Roles open worldwide are the ones to look at first if you live outside the big hiring countries. We track them separately for applicants in Nepal.

How we count

  • Source. Open roles collected from employers’ own career pages (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and Workable boards). A role leaves the count when the company takes it down. Listings from partner job boards are not included.
  • Role family and level come from keywords in the job title. Titles with no recognisable family are counted as “Other roles”.
  • Where applicants can live comes from the location the company gives for applicants, or the job’s region when no applicant location is given. “Not stated” means neither names a country or region we recognise.
  • Published in the last seven days uses the date the company published the role when its board gives one, and otherwise the date we first found it.
